Acne is one of the most widespread skin conditions causing spots and pimples primarily on the face, neck, chest, back & shoulders. The term ‘spots’ can refer to a number of different skin conditions, including blemishes and pimples, acne, age spots, freckles, red spots and rashes.

The most common types of acne or spots are usually whiteheads and blackheads and more commonly found in teenagers during the start of puberty and usually disappears by the early twenties. However, it can be a problem for many into their 30s and beyond.
Acne and spots occur when hair follicles become blocked and inflamed. The most common causes of acne or spots is usually either excess oil (Sebum) which leads to an increase in bacteria or hormonal changes such as puberty or a women’s menstrual cycle.
Other causes and triggers to acne and spots can also be related to any number of factors such as; Genetics, hormones, birth control, infections, medications, diet, stress Levels and even smoking.
More than 80% of cases of adult acne occur in women. It's thought that many cases of adult acne are caused by the changes in hormone levels that many women have at certain times.

Treatment for acne depends on how severe it is. It can take several months of treatment before acne symptoms improve.
If you just have a few blackheads, whiteheads and spots, a pharmacist should be able to advise you on how to treat them successfully with over-the-counter gels or creams (topical treatments) that contain benzoyl peroxide.
This can range from antibiotics which you apply as a cream or a gel, or your doctor could prescribe antibiotic tablets, for courses of three to six months. "There are also stronger tablets, which people can take and would be done under the supervision of a dermatologist."
